Norwegian Research Schools: Nature Masterclass

This high-level writing course is a collaboration between several Norwegian national research schools, and is aimed at senior PhD students and postdocs who are working on high-impact data for top-tier journals. The workshop is taught by editors from selected relevant journals from the Nature Publishing Group, and aims to provide coaching and contact between the authors and the editors to facilitate tailoring results and pitch to the target audience.

Through talks, seminars, practical exercises and workshops, the course will cover the following topics: What makes a Nature paper? ; You’re the Editor – Making a Decision; Selecting a Journal; Figure Presentation; Brevity, Titles and Abstracts; From Introduction to Conclusion; Submitting your Paper; The Editorial Process; Mechanisms of Peer Review; You’re the Editor - Choosing Referees; Journal Decisions; Referee Reports; Measuring Impact.

Learning outcomes:

  • After the course you know how to get the most out of the writing process
  • You understand the editorial processes and how to work with them

When and Where: This two-day intensive course will be taught at Isegran Fort in Fredrikstad, 6-7 September. Lodging will be on-site in shared rooms, and food will be provided locally. Lodging includes the night before and during the course, and attendants are expected to arrive the day before the course, and leave on the second day when the course is over.

Selection: DEEP has a limited number of places in this course for students who are working on high-impact data for top-tier journals and preferentially have a draft manuscript of a paper ready. In the submission form you will be asked to upload an abstract for the paper you plan to work on during the course. We will select those of you whom are most likely to benefit from this course.

Registration: Registration includes venue, teachers and food. DEEP members can attend free of charge. In addition DEEP will cover travel and accommodation for eligible DEEP members.
