The motion of fluids through a porous medium is analyzed via slow drainage experiments in planar transparent networks. The fluid motion in these experiments is characterized by an interesting burst activity, in which long intervals of stagnation are interrupted by sudden invasion events in an intermittent fashion. Our setup allowed us to directly probe this burst activity via pressure measurements and images of the flow. We have analyzed several properties of interest to the dynamics, such as the spatial distribution of invasion bursts in the medium, the pressure fluctuations associated to the bursts and the role played by the system's geometry in the flow morphology. We have also verified experimentally (for the first time) a theoretical prediction present in the scientific literature for the relative probability of invasion of separate pores (pair correlation function). This result was first obtained by numerical simulations and theoretical arguments nearly 30 years ago.
Our results provide new insights about the interesting dynamics of fluid motion inside a porous network and open new windows for research in this important field.
