Den 4. oktober 2011 vedtok den Europeiske romfartsorganisasjonen ESA hvilke to satellitter som skal sendes opp i årene 2017-2019 som del av deres forskningsprogram Cosmic Vision. Resultatet ble satellittene Solar Orbiter og Euclid. Forskere ansatt ved Institutt for teoretisk astrofysikk ved Universitetet i Oslo deltar i begge disse prosjektene.
