Register to the Norwegian Astronomy Omlypiads

The Institute of Theoretical Astrophysics and the Rosseland Centre for Solar Physics, University of Oslo, will soon be preparing for next year's 2019-2020 Olympics in Colombia. High school students with an interest in astronomy and astrophysics are now invited to join.

Round 1:

A free day of choice during weeks 45-46 (November 4th - November 17th, 2019).

  • Time: 90 minutes.
  • The "syllabus" for the first round is Physics 1 plus momentum and energy conservation from Physics 2. The answers will be corrected by the schools' physics teachers and the results will be sent to the IOAA's committee.

The approx. 60 best candidates in the 1st round are offered to participate in the 2nd round.
Astronomy and Astrophysics Olympics assignments are only sent electronically to schools that want to participate.

The tasks are sent out approx. one week in advance.

Round 2:

Wednesday, February 12th, 2020.

  • Time: 90 minutes.
  • "Syllabus" is Physics 1 plus mechanics from Physics 2. The answers are directed by the Physics Olympiad Committee.

Schools that have major problems holding the exam on that day are asked to contact the Shahin Jafarzadeh to agree on another date.

Course and Norwegian finals:

Week 13 (March 23rd - 27th, 2020)

The top 16 candidates from the second round will be offered a one-week course at the Institute of Theoretical Astrophysics, University of Oslo. The stay will conclude with a final Norwegian competition where only five candidates will be selected to participate to the international finals.

Cancelled! Based on the guidelines of the health authorities and of the University of Oslo (UiO) for infection protection, all the science olympiads, that were going to organise courses and the final exam at UiO this spring (i.e., the Chemistry, Astronomy, Biology, and Physics Olympiads), have decided to cancel the course.


International finals:

To be held in August of 2020 in Bogotá, Colombia.
