Two misshapen spiral galaxies combine to form a beautiful celestial flower in this Hubble image taken with the Wide Field Camera 3. Known as Arp 273, the pair is among hundreds of "peculiar" galaxies catalogued by astronomer Halton Arp in the 1960s. The gravitational attraction between these two galaxies has created their physical distortions. Credits: NASA and the Space Telescope Science Institute (STScI)

I will briefly describe galaxies and their connection to large scale structures. Basics of cosmic numerical simulations and some main results will also be presented.

portrettbildet av en mann Dr. Diego García Lambas is currently Senior Researcher at CONICET and Full Professor at the National University of Córdoba. At the beginning of his career he served as a research fellow at CONICET and CONICOR, completing his Postdoctoral training at Princeton University (USA) under the direction of Dr. James Peebles (winner of the 2019 Nobel Prize in Physics), and at Oxford (UK) under the supervision of Dr. George Efstathiou. In subsequent years he worked as a researcher at CONICET and professor at the Astronomical Observatory of Córdoba, currently being the author of more than 180 scientific works published in prestigious international journals in the field of “Large Scale Structure of the Universe.” Also, it has received numerous grants for scientific research from national institutions (CONICET, CONICOR, SeCyT, UNC, FONCyT, Fundación Antorchas) and foreign institutions (DAAD from Germany, The British Council from the United Kingdom, ECOS from France and the European Union). Likewise, it has maintained and currently maintains numerous international collaborations with Latin American and European countries.
In addition to research tasks, García Lambas has stood out for his management tasks, among which he has been the Director of the Astronomical Observatory between April 2010 and March 2017 and Director of the Institute of Theoretical and Experimental Astronomy (IATE- CONICET-UNC) on multiple occasions. He has also participated in the search for a site for the installation of international telescopes in Argentina, from which the Macón Astronomical Center was born in the province of Salta, where the TOROS telescope of the University of Texas is being completed.
