Abstract
The European Southern Observatory (ESO) is considered to be the largest and a world leading astronomical observing facility. I will attempt to give an overview of; i) ESOs history and achievements at the La Silla observatory; ii) the present Very Large Telescope facility; and ii) the future projects of ESO (ALMA and E-ELT).
