Summary:
Proton therapy is emerging as an efficient tool in cancer treatment. I will briefly discuss the physical principles behind and contrast it to conventional radiation therapy with x-rays. Further, I will discuss the increased diffusion of proton and ion therapy throughout the world and the status of this modality in Norway. The possible adaption of new medical technology raises medical, ethical, economic and political questions, which will also be discussed.
