At any given time there are millions of type II spicules in the atmosphere of the Sun. Yet there are only measured properties on some thousand type II spicules since the discovery of them 5 years ago. Given their possibly vital part in the energy and mass balance in the solar atmosphere more spicules need to be studied in detail. In my talk I will give you an introduction to the elusive spicules, and I will talk about how to detect them, which is what I do these days.
