The tree line is climbing up the mountains

With the help of citizen scientists, researchers of the Emerald project are mapping the changes to the tree line in Norway.

And it is steadily moving to higher altitudes in Norway. While more trees sound like a good idea for carbon capture, the story is not as simple. Up there, bushes and trees can lead to a reduction of the snow cover, which in turn reduces the reflected sunlight. Less reflected light means that the landscape is warming up, and thus, more trees can contribute to global warming. Learn more about the project in a recent NRK interview with Anders Bryn (in Norwegian).
