Microbial genomics and metabolism

We aim to make predictions about the role of ubiquitous microorganisms in mediating chemical transformation processes, in particular related to greenhouse gas emissions.

Biological insights by combining experiments, computation and observations. Here, we use high-throughput molecular techniques generating multiomic sequence information (DNA, mRNA, and protein) to link microorganisms at the individual, population, and community levels to a wide range of ecosystem functions and services.

By integrating geochemical profiles, process rate measurements (kinetics) and omics data into biogeochemical models we aim to obtain a holistic insight into the microbial metabolic network driving mass and energy flow at ecosystem scales.

Here, we plan to:

  • perform laboratory experiments and circumpolar surveys on freshwater and coastal marine microbes
  • develop a reference genome set for boreal and arctic aquatic Bacteria and Archaea
  • provide experimental data to model microbial metabolism
  • integrate geochemical, kinetic and sequence data to model mass and energy flow through aquatic ecosystems
