International team of climate researchers reconstructs global cooling in the reign of the Roman emperor Justinian. Ice-cores and data about sulfate flux at Greenland and Artica reveils the pasts climate disasters. Their research was presented at EGU 2016; Vienna recently.

The ExoMars2016 probe on the way

The ExoMars2016 probe was launched into space Monday March 14. Stephanie Wernet from the CEED Centre and GEO, UiO has been one of those finding a landing site for the rover in the mission. The probe will, if everything works after the plan, arrive Mars in October this year.

Fem år siden jordskjelvet utenfor Japan

Fredag 11. mars 2016 er det nøyaktig 5 år siden det store jordskjelvet utenfor kysten av Japan i 2011. I spalten "Forskningsfronten" i Morgenbladet skriver Henrik H. Svensen (CEED og Institutt for geofag) om katastrofen som tok livet av 19 000 mennesker, og der opprydningsarbeidet og sikring av et atomkraftverk fortsatt pågår.

The Geilo workshop 2016

To kick-off the newly established collaborative project on “Climate, Volcanism, and Tectonics” between the Centre for Earth Evolution and Dynamics and the paleoclimate modeling group at the Bjerknes Centre for Climate Research we wish to invite to a joint workshop at Geilo. The main aim will be to discuss the potential role of bathymetry on ocean circulation in the causes and nature of extreme climates of the geologic past, and compare these to other possible forcing mechanism such as volcanism.

Supercomputing at CEED

CEED researchers contributes with an article in the most recent copy of Meta magazine.

The article Looking inside the Earth using e-infrastructure resources is about supercomputing and is written by Abigail L. Bull, Trond H. Torsvik, Eva H. Fritzell, Chris E. Mohn, Nils Prieur, Tobias Rolf, Grace Shephard and Reidar Trønnes, all at CEED.

Grace E. Shephard has been awarded the Arne Richter Award for Outstanding Young Scientists

Trond H. Torsvik has been awarded the Arthur Holmes Medal & Honorary Membership of the European Geosciences Union.

Morgan Jones from CEED is the winner of the EGU2015 Photo Competition arranged by the European Geosciences Union, General Assembly 2015. Jones won with a picture from the Holuhraun volcano eruption, Iceland 2014. The picture is taken with Sverre Planke from Volcanic Basin Petroleum Research AS (VBPR) and CEED.
