Careful study of all Cenozoic examples of failed, incipient or achieved subduction initiation (SI) is used to better constrain the structural inheritage as well as the geodynamic setting that prevailed at the time of strain localization. Based on observations, it is possible to link each SI case to one or several lithospheric or mantellic forcings. Gravitational collapse of an old lithosphere without external forcings might have occurred in a hot Earth but is unlikely in a modern one.
