The sediments in Arne Qvam Cave. Photo: Samuel Walker

The cave we have been working was discovered in 1992 when Norcem was building a tunnel. At that time Arne Qvam was the leader of Norcem. He immediately recognized the great value of the sediments preserved in this cave. And to make sure it would not be damaged he had a 50 cm thick wall built to protect the cave and its contents.

This decision to build a wall in order to protect the cave has been absolutely decisive, and it is thanks to this wall that so much of the sediments have remained intact. To acknowledge the importance of Arne Qvam’s protection we have renamed the cave to Arne Qvam cave. It was heartwarming that this new name received much applause during our presentation at the local library. It is great that so many people in Kjøpsvik value this fantastic archive that is found here.
