Research interest
Current research is mainly motivated by industry, and combines field work, theory, numerical simulations, and experiments. These focus on improving experimental techniques, which is important to be able to gain new insights in complex physical phenomena.
Funding for a new instrument has been recently awarded from the University of Oslo, which is based on a novel design using X-ray sources and detectors to perform Particle Tracking. This will bring measurement techniques further, in contexts where optical distortion is traditionally a problem. Research topics include: experimental fluid mechanics, ML methods, marine hydrodynamics, nonlinear waves, waves interaction with oil and ice, tsunami and solitary waves, microfluidics, internal waves, and multiphase flow. These cover scales from µm to km.
Short bio
Atle Jensen is the group leader of the Section for Mechanics at the Department of Mathematics and Head of the Hydrodynamics Laboratory at the University of Oslo.
Since 2005 he has been a PI or co-PI of 10 external projects funded by the Research council
of Norway and the industry. Atle Jensen is the author of 68 journal papers, 2 patents pending, and was awarded an innovation award in 2011.
