Research interest

My research focus is in the fields of beta cell replacement therapy, 3D bioprinting, tissue engineering, diabetes, stem cell biology, cellular therapy, and organ on a chip technology. I have extensive experience with clinical trials in different patient populations and significant knowhow in isolation and transplantation of human derived cellular products such as pancreatic insulin producing beta-cells and adult stem cells. This work is essential for benchmarking of in vitro differentiated organoids generated from human iPS sources.

A recent research focus is developing a stem cell based functional pancreas organoid for the Organ on a chip platform. I work in multidisciplinary research environment of basic scientists, medical clinicians, surgeons and bioengineering technicians.

Short bio

Dr. Hanne Scholz is a senior researcher of Cell Transplantation and Regenerative Medicine and the Director of the Human Islet Isolation Facility at Oslo University Hospital. In 2018 she joined the University of Oslo as principle investigator and vice director at The Hybrid Technology Hub, Center of Excellence, Institute of Basic Medical Sciences, University of Oslo. She is the project leader of “Artificial Biomimetic systems – the Niche of Islet Organoids” UiO Life Sciences convergence II environment (2019-2021).

Fostering new international collaboration is of paramount importance and Dr. Scholz is board member of the Nordic Network for Clinical Islet Transplantation, and serve as councilors of the International Pancreas and Islet Transplantation Association (IPITA) and European Society for Organ Transplantation (ESOT).
