Discovery Learning: Transferable Skills

The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences is pleased to invite all our PhD candidates to a seminar about transferable skills. The main goal of the seminar is to discuss transferable skills and get your input on what we can do to help you develop these skills.

This seminar is part of  The EU-funded DISCOVERY LEARNING project which explores effective approaches for participatory, empowered and evolutionary work-based learning in PhD programmes and for transferable skills training related to open science and innovation in higher education.

By doing a PhD you get the opportunity to dive deep into your discipline and become a specialist in your research field. But through this process you also acquire a number of other skills, often called generic or transferable skills. For most employers these skills are as important as your scientific competencies as they make you versatile and able to tackle a wide range of challenges.

It might be challenging for PhD candidates to identify which transferable skills they have acquired after an academic experience such as PhD education, but the most valued skills by employers are also the ones you need to complete your PhD, for example:

  • communication – academic writing, presentation skills, speaking to policy and non-expert audiences
  • research – disciplinary expertise, data analysis, project management
  • interpersonal – leadership, networking, teamwork, conflict resolution

At this seminar we will discuss transferable skills and get your input on what we can do to help you develop these skills. And the social dimension is important, after a long period of no opportunities to meet like this.

Knut Mørken, Dean of Studies and Education, will lead the seminar together with  Linda Westgaard (ForVei adviser) and Eva Dugstad (Manager of Business and Community Relations). Members of the PhD team will be present as well.

Programme:

11:30 - 12:00 Lunch

12:00 – 12:30 The Dean of Studies and Education presents Discovery Learning (Home | Discovery Learning)

12:30-14:00 Open discussion related to what works in higher education for training on transferable skills. How to use transferable skills to broaden the spectrum of career and job opportunities.
