Sigurd Kjoberg and Syahreza Saidina Angkasa graduated from the master’s programme at Dept. of Geosciences in 2016. They are now first authors of articles in the scientific journal Interpretation, articles which are based on their master theses.
UiO:Life Science plans the launch of the SPARK innovation programme, developed by Stanford University. The goal is to get more innovation out of basic research. The other two European SPARK programs visit Oslo this summer to share their experiences, and one of UiO's PhD students will test the program's summer school in Japan.
The board of UiO:Life Science has decided to support the newly established School of Health Innovation at UiO, NTNU and Karolinska Institutet. With this UiO:Life Science wants to contribute to establish a new strong player in the UiO ecosystem of innovation.
Shinya Yamanaka, 2012 Nobel Laureate in Physiology or Medicine, will visit Oslo on September 6. He will give a lecture about a new era of medicine with induced pluripotent stem cells – iPS cells – and participate in a panel discussion about the ethical aspects of stem cell therapy. Department of Geosciences, University of Oslo receives RokDoc software for $30 million from Ikon Science (UK). The software will be used in teaching in two advanced courses in petroleum geophysics.
Aerial photos taken by drones are of great help for documenting changes at the ground for researchers at Department of Geosciences. Photos of the thawing of permafrost get attention, and in the May edition of the journal Nature Climate Change is one of their photos of decreasing permafrost in North of Norway chosen as a cover photo.

It will be built a new classroom in connection with Auditorium 1 in the Geology building, Blindern. Auditorium 1-2 will therefore be closed from 18 April to tentatively Sept. 15, 2017. Also Visjonariet will be closed in certain periods.

American Geophysical Union had recently its big annual fall meeting in San Francisco. Here participated PhD fellow Solveig Havstad Winsvold, Department of Geosciences. She presented a new way to measure glaciers, now mentioned in an article by NASA SCIENCE.
Several interested members of the public and researchers working with natural hazards and earthquakes were in the audience on 13. December to follow the seminar on Risk and management of earthquakes. CEED-professor Torgeir B. Andersen gave a lecture about why Italy are affected by a large number of earthquakes and discussed several aspects concerning the geology of earthquakes.
UiO:Life Science is one of three large interdisciplinary strategic areas at UiO. Our strategy states that we shall strengthen quality and interaction in research; recruit, educate and develop talents; and promote innovation in the life sciences related to environment and health.
