New collaborative publication from former iAPOGEE scholar!

Ricardo Rohweder, a 2023 guest researcher at PharmaSafe and iAPOGEE scholar, has just published a article in collaboration with PharmaSafe members.

Title: "Medication Use Among Pregnant Women With SARS-CoV-2 Infection and Risk of Hospitalization: A Study in Two Brazilian Hospitals."

Abstract: This study aimed to shed light on medication use patterns and risk factors for hospitalization due to COVID-19 in pregnant women. Conducted in two Brazilian hospitals, the research analyzed data from 278 SARS-CoV-2-positive pregnant women between March 2020 and August 2022.

Key Findings:

  • 14.7% of pregnant women required hospitalization due to COVID-19, while 85.3% had mild symptoms or were asymptomatic.
  • Analgesics, antibacterials, and corticosteroids were the most commonly used medications across all trimesters.
  • Pre- or gestational hypertensive disorder was associated with almost a five-fold increased risk of hospitalization due to COVID-19.
  • Remarkably, having at least one dose of the SARS-CoV-2 vaccine was linked to a significantly reduced risk of hospitalization.

This study provides valuable insights into medication use and risk factors for pregnant women with SARS-CoV-2 infection. It has significant implications for healthcare professionals and policymakers when managing COVID-19 in pregnancy.
