PharmaSafe hosts OMOP Seminar in Oslo

PharmaSafe hosted a Perinatal OMOP seminar in Oslo from May 6th to May 8th, 2024. This collaborative event, a result of the development of perinatal expansion tables, brings together PharmaSafe researchers and colleagues from various institutions, including SIDIAP (Information System for the Development of Research in Primary Care in Barcelona, Spain), University of Oxford, University of Gothenburg, and University of Dundee.

The primary objective of the seminar was to pilot the utilization of the perinatal expansion tables in a pharmacoepidemiological study and deliberate on their future implementations within the DARWIN network. This initiative represents a crucial step toward leveraging advanced data tools, fostering international collaboration, and accelerating the pace of innovative research in the field of pharmacoepidemiology. The seminar provided a platform for knowledge exchange, tutorials, and discussions focused on conducting perinatal pharmacoepidemiological studies using the OMOP (Observational Medical Outcomes Partnership) common data model, advanced causal inference methods, and a federated analytic approach.

During the seminar, the first day was dedicated to presentations focused on data harmonization into the OMOP format and how pregnancy-related data is captured. The collective sharing of experiences from diverse settings was instrumental in optimizing the mapping routine and developing a procedural framework for implementing and validating algorithms across European databases.

On day two, the participants engaged in dialogue, delving into project ideas presented by NĂºria Mercade Besora, and refining them further with inputs from domain experts. Participants also learned how a research question is transformed into an OMOP study package. This day concluded wth a memorable outing to the Oslo Opera House and group dinner at Clarion Hotel the Hub.

The seminar was finalized with reviewing preliminary results and outlining some exciting research activities that will be carried out following the seminar.

With the aim of facilitating collaboration and strengthening perinatal pharmacoepidemiological research, this seminar served as a vital platform for creating new partnerships, fostering knowledge sharing, and providing training materials aligned with the OMOP format. By equipping researchers with essential tools and the know-how to effectively utilize the OMOP framework, we are poised to accelerate advancements in perinatal pharmacoepidemiology. Through the support of iAPOGEE and UiO:Life Science, this seminar exemplified the importance of international collaboration.

As we continue our pursuit of cutting-edge research, we look forward to sharing further outcomes, collaborations, and breakthroughs that arise from this seminar. Stay connected and anticipate future developments!
