Biorepository of breast milk and breast milk studies – an overview of activities at the Center for Better Beginnings

Christina Chambers

The UCSD Human Milk Biorepository (HMB) known as Mommy's Milk was established in 2014 at the Center for Better Beginnings at the University of California San Diego. The purpose is to provide an international repository of well-curated breast milk samples and associated clinical data to support research on the properties of breast milk and effects on infant growth and development.

Initial HMB studies have quantified medications and substances, and examined microbiome, metabolome, oligosaccharide and macronutrient content in breast milk across a diverse sample of mothers/infants.

The HMB is accessible to researchers to help address unanswered questions about human milk.
