Action Mechanism and Active Ingredients in Kampo (Japanese Traditional Medicines) Medicines

Guest lecture by professor Haruki Yamada, Kitasato Institute for Life Sciences, The Kitasato University, Tokyo, Japan.

In this lecture professor Yamada will include polysaccharide research, and the topic should be of interest for everybody studying biological effects and structure of plant polysaccharides, as well as their importance in the traditional Japanese medicine.

Haruki Yamada Ph.D. – is Member of the Scientific Advisory Committee, DNDi, (Drugs for Neglected Diseases initiative); and was until recently Director, Dean and Professor, Kitasato Institute for Life Sciences & Graduate School of Infection Control Sciences, Kitasato University, as well as member of the Board of Directors, The Kitasato Institute.

Professor Yamada received his Ph.D. from the Graduate School of Pharmaceutical Science, Tokyo College of Pharmacy, and was appointed as postdoctoral fellow at the University of California, Berkeley.

He has had a distinguished career in chemical, biochemical and pharmacological studies of Kampo (Japanese herbal) medicines and screening of biologically active substances, including anti-infectious compounds from natural products. He is also a Cooperative Member, Science Council of Japan.

He has worked as the Executive Director for research of the Kitasato Institute until 2008, and worked with WHO as a Director of the WHO collaborating Center for Traditional Medicine and as a member of JPMW anti-malarial screening project of the Kitasato Institute. He has received several awards, including the Lifu Academic Award for Chinese Medicine (International Award) and Award of the Medical and Pharmaceutical Society for WAKAN-YAKU.

He is author and co-author of 328 papers and 18 books.

Professor Yamada is member of the advisory board of the EU project MUTHI, coordinated by School of Pharmacy.
