Sammendrag

This dissertation "Differential coding for MIMO and Cooperative Communications" was submitted to the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences at the University of Oslo as a requirement for the Ph.D. degree. The most of this work was carried out at UNIK- University Graduate Center, Kjeller, Norway and some parts are done at University of Minneasota, Minneapolis, USA and Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi, India.

In this dissertation, we address the problem of increasing the data-rate of next generation cellular mobile systems by using differential modulation. For receiving the video, image, voice, and text data correctly at the mobile or base station we need perfect information about the wireless channel. However, the wireless channel is extremely volatile and changes very fast. Therefore, the current cellular systems use a lot of training data for acquiring accurate information about the wireless channel. Thus the effective data-rate reduces as significant amount of valuable bandwidth is wasted for training. However, we may save this bandwidth loss if the data is transmitted differentially, i.e., the transmission of each symbol is dependent over all previously transmitted symbols.

This dissertation developed new differential coding for the next generation high data-rate cellular systems which are supposed to have multiple transmit/receive antennas at the mobile and base stations, and cooperation among the mobile users. In order to avoid the degradation of the reception quality due to the movement of the mobile user, a new double-differential coding is developed which also helps in increasing the data-rate.
