Sammendrag

The emergence of local short-range wireless communication technologies such as Bluetooth enables local connectivity between devices that form a personal area network (PAN). Another emerging paradigm, namely mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs), enables IP routing on multi-hop ad hoc networks. Bluetooth and MANETs could be combined to complement each other and overcome limitations of each technology. The dissertation of Mr. Engelstad addresses the challenges of combining Bluetooth and MANETs in order to build more efficient communication solutions for PANs based on IP. This dissertation consists of two parts.

The research contribution of Mr Engelstad is logically divided into three components which stem out of the main research goal of building IP-based PANs. These three components include functions of the PAN middleware, algorithms for network formation, and network support for higher layers.

The research work has resulted in eleven (11) papers which present different aspect of Mr Engelstad's work and research contribution.
