Sammendrag
The thesis “Estimation of unsaturated flow parameters by inverse flow modeling and GPR tomography” was submitted to Department of Geosciences, University of Oslo as a requirement for the PhD degree. This work was done in collaboration with Norwegian Geotechnical Institute (NGI), Bioforsk and the Norwegian Water Resources and Energy Directorate (NVE).
To understand the importance of such researches I would like to pose some questions. Can we survive without oil? What about water? How our life will be influenced if oil is finished? How can we survive without clean water? Do we put enough emphasize and research on hydrology as we put on petroleum? I think everybody knows the answers of these questions. The final question I would like to pose is that isn’t it time to wake up?
This thesis is a small part of the many efforts which are done to increase our understanding about the water and its physical behavior. In the relatively new field of hydrogeophysics, scientists try to apply different geophysical methods, which are mainly developed in mine and oil industry, at the field of hydrology. In this work, we tried to monitor the water flow through the soil before reaching the groundwater using a geophysical method called Ground Penetrating Radar. We used these data to make a flow model for our research field site close to the Gardermoen. Flow model has many practical applications. For example, if contaminants penetrate into the soil, flow model can tell us that where contaminants are at any desired time.
