Sammendrag

This botanical study was carried out at the Department of Biology at the University of Oslo, between the years 2003 to 2006. The plants of focus belong to the genus Aloe, whose economic value has held the interest of man in both traditional and modern societies. In this study, the taxonomy, conservation needs and economic potential of Kenyan aloes has been established. Although only a few species like Aloe vera and Aloe ferox are globally recognized as important constituents of pharmaceutical and cosmetic products, many aloes are used extensively where they occur. In a survey of the use of aloes in some communities of Kenya, the local people listed fifty-seven different uses of the plants, mostly as herbal remedies for man and his livestock. Following the documentation of species distributions, their use and population trends, the conservation status of most species has been assessed and conservation action proposed. The information presented should provide the basis necessary for the development of the commercial aloe sector in Kenya in particular, and the Eastern African region in general.
