Aurora in Hornsund

Three weeks ago we installed an All-Sky-Camera in Hornsund. The first photo of the northern lights was taken last night!

In the second half of August we installed a new All-Sky-Camera in Hornsund. The camera box was carefully prepared by mechanical workshop at our department and about 40 kg of equipment was transported to Hornsund by plane and boat and finally installed at the Polish Polar Station in Hornsund. Last night the first photo of aurora arrived from Hornsund.

4DSpace is now operating at Hornsund both the GNSS TEC and Scintillation monitor to study the effect of ionospheric plasma turbulence and structuring on the transionospheric radio signals, and the All-Sky-Camera for monitoring of auroral activity and cloud cover. These two instruments together will give us more insight into the effects of aurora on the structuring of the ionosphere but also directly on the reliability of the satellite based navigation signals during increased geomagnetic activity.

The project in Hornsund is being carried out together with the Institute of Geophysics of Polish Academy of Sciences at the Polish Polar Station in Hornsund.

Note: 4DSpace operates now instruments (GNSS receivers, All-Sky-Cameras, and All-Sky-Imagers) in Svalbard (Ny-Ă…lesund, Longyearbyen, Hornsund), Northern Norway (Skibotn), and in Antarctica (Troll Ionospheric Observatory, Troll Station, Queen Maud Land).
