Resonances in atomic nuclei

Based on the similar summer school in Oslo (2019), the topic of the 2022 summer school in South Africa will be on nuclear resonances. By taking this course, students will gain knowledge on resonance phenomena like the giant dipole resonance, the pygmy resonance, and the scissor resonance. One will get an introduction to the theoretical basis, included practical use of codes for numerical calculations, and knowledge on how these phenomena can be studied experimentally.

About the course:

The course FYS4545 (worth 5 ECTS at UiO) is arranged as a Summer school from the 24th of October to the 4th of November 2022 in the Kruger park in South Africa.  This course was first run in June 2019 at the University of Oslo

Each student that attends the summer school will be required to give a ten minute presentation based on the work that they are doing. This gives the students a chance to practice their presentation skills as well as the chance to receive feedback.

Lecturers:

  • S.Siem
  • M. Wiedeking
  • A. Görgen
  • L. Pellegri
  • P. von Neumann-Cosel
  • A. Tamii

Topics to be covered:

  • Introduction to resonances
  • The pygmy resonance
  • Experimental photon strength functions
  • Giant dipole resonances

Schedule:

The schedule for the summer school is as shown below. Social activities will take place during the first weekend.
