Treatment of contaminated dental implant surfaces

David Wiedmer, Dept. Oral Biology, Faculty of Dentistry, UiO

This seminar will give a brief introduction of dental implant surfaces in general and implant failure due to peri-implant disease in particular. Peri-implant disease or peri-implantitis is an inflammatory condition around a dental implant caused by bacteria which can result in the loss of supporting bone and ultimately lead  to total implant failure. The treatment of this diseases is challenging and requires the decontamination of the implant surface. The focus of this seminar will be a new treatment strategy for peri-implantitis which is based on the formation of bactericidal reactive oxygen species.
