Photon Counting and X-ray Spectroscopy

You want to do part of your education in a company in microelectronics for applications in science and industry? You enjoy creating/building microelectronic designs, write software for FPGAs, microcontrollers or embedded systems. Then apply for a project with IDEAS!

Silicon photomultipliers (SiPMs) are photo sensors with applications in nuclear physics, radioprotection and Lidar. APOCAT - Array of Photon Counters Above Threshold -  is an integrated circuit (ASIC), that has been developed by IDEAS for reading out arrays of SiPMs to allow one to measure the number of visible light photons.

Depending on the skill and interests of the candidate, several thesis topics are possible in this field:

  • Characterization of the APOCAT ASIC in the lab with scintillators and photo sensors (SiPMs and PMTs). Advisor: Dirk
  • Electronic hardware and firmware development for the use with APOCAT and SiPMs. The electronic hardware will lead to a photo sensor system that allows customers to replace conventional photomultiplier tube assemblies. Advisor: Codin

Integrated Detector Electronics AS (IDEAS) is a privately held, R&D-driven, semiconductor company, based in Oslo, Norway. The company designs application specific integrated circuits (ASICs) for imaging systems. IDEAS work with scientific organizations and business partners to innovate and create new products for applications in science and industry. The IDEAS team consists of electronics engineers and physicists with more than 25 years in business.
