Map of Euro-Mediterranean water use regions in LISFLOOD.
Published Mar. 6, 2023 3:27 PM

LISFLOOD is a distributed hydrologic and water resources model that has been developed by the Joint Research Centre (JRC) of the European Commission. It is used by the Copernicus Emergency Management Service for operational flood forecasting and drought monitoring. LISFLOOD has also been applied for integrated water resources assessments.

Europe has experienced several dry and hot summers in the 21st century; in 2018 northern Europe was hit by an extreme drought centred over Scandinavia and in 2022 large part of Europe suffered extreme hot and dry conditions. Unlike many other natural hazards, droughts may persist for long periods and this is particularly true for groundwater droughts, which are the focus of this study

Europe has recently been hit by both extreme wet and dry conditions. In July 2021, a storm stalled over central Europe causing catastrophic flooding, with more than 200 casualties and large damages, notable in Belgium and Germany. In summer 2022, large parts of southern and central Europe experienced extremely hot and dry conditions with wide-ranging impacts - said to be the worst drought in Europe in 500 years.

Water flow on, in and under glaciers still remains a poorly understood system. Water can flow over the surface of glaciers, as well as through channels inside and under the ice. The water thereby has a strong influence both on ice melt and glacier dynamics, making glacial hydrology an important field of study.
