International Hydrology Prize 2024 to Lena M. Tallaksen

Professor of hydrology, Lena Merete Tallaksen, Dept. of Geosciences, University of Oslo, has been awarded the International Hydrology Prize – the Doodge Medal by the International Association of Hydrological Sciences. She is the first in Norway to receive this award.

The International Hydrology Prize is awarded annually by the International Association of Hydrological Sciences (IAHS), UNESCO and the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). The award goes to two scientists who have made outstanding contributions to hydrological science. The award consists of two medals: The Dooge Medal and the Volker Medal.

Professor of hydrology at University of Oslo, Lena Merete Tallaksen, Section for Geography and Hydrology, Department of Geosciences has now been awarded one of the medals under the international hydrology prize.

Increased understanding of extreme weather events

Lena M. Tallaksen has been awarded this year's International Hydrology Prize and will receive the Dooge Medal for 2024. The IAHS states on its website this for the nomination for the 2024 recipients of the IAHS-UNESCO-WMO International Hydrology Prize:

Dooge medal – in recognition of her outstanding and remarkable contributions in taking to new frontiers the hydrological understanding of extreme weather events for the betterment of our communities – Prof. Lena Merete Tallaksen, at the University of Oslo, Physical Geography and Hydrology Section, Department of Geosciences, in Norway.

Tallaksen will be the first Norwegian recipient of the 'International Hydrology Prize', a prize that has been awarded to scientists in the field of hydrology annually since 1981.

The International Hydrology Prize: Both the Dooge Medal and the Volker Medal are awarded to scientists who have made outstanding achievements in hydrological research. The Dooge Medal recognizes fundamental contributions to hydrological science.

The award ceremony will take place in Florianópolis, Brazil, at the conference of the IAHS and the Brazilian Association of Water Resources (ABRHidro), Nov. 4 to 7, 2024.

About the International Hydrology Prize

The prize was established in 1981 and is awarded by the International Association of Hydrological Sciences (IAHS), UNESCO and the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). From 2014, it has been awarded as two medals: the Dooge Medal and the Volker Medal. Both are given for outstanding achievements by scientists in the field of hydrology. Read more about the prize.
