The LASI community gathers scientists interested in volcanology and shallow-level tabular igneous intrusions.
The upcoming conference is an interdisciplinary forum where specialists in geology from: volcanology, tectonics & structural geology, petrology, geochemistry, geochronology, geophysics, exploration geology, to modelers come together.
Long series of conferences
The conference series started in 2002, and it is now time for the sixth conference to take place. Five international conferences have been held since 2002, each one with 40-50 participants from 10-17 countries, presenting papers and attending a field trip to tabular intrusions.
Volcanology is a comprehensive subject field which covers many of the disciplines in geology and geosciences. Several people will participate at this year's conference.
This year as many as 82 participants have signed up for the LASI-conference, and of them are 5 scientists from the University of Oslo.
Conference programme and field trip
The conference`s scientific "indoor" programme consist of lectures, poster presentations, workshops and networking. The three last days are for a field trip to Neuquén Basin, Malargüe.
The Malargüe area offers world-class outcrops of volcanic plumbing systems emplaced in sedimentary basins, thanks to a unique combination of old volcanism, Andean tectonics and an arid climate.
In addition, this is one of the first parts of the world where hydrocarbons are produced directly from the subsurface volcanic systems, and these systems will become world case studies for novel hydrocarbon exploration in numerous volcanic basins worldwide.
The 2019 conference organised by Galland
This year, Olivier Galland from University of Oslo is serving as the organiser of the conference. Galland is a specialist in volcanology and researcher at Department of Geosciences, and affiliated with the Njord Centre (link) for studies of the Physics of the Earth.
Galland has over several years done research in volcanology and geohazards. He is responsible for teaching on MSc and PhD level in the course GEO4151 – Earthquake and Volcanic Processes, Dept. of Geosciences, University of Oslo.
The conference's deadline for registration was in July 2019.
