Seminar by Ugo Nanni, Department of Geosciences, University of Oslo:
Insights from climate negotiations: from COP 27 to Ambition on Melting Ice
Abstract:
Over the past year, I have been involved with ICCI (https://iccinet.org/) a network of senior policy experts and researchers working with governments and organizations. The goal of this network is to create, shape and implement initiatives designed to preserve as much of the Earth’s cryosphere as possible. I have been participating in COP 27, and the preparation for the next COP 28. COP 27 was a success for the Cryosphere as a broad coalition of 20 governments — led by the two polar and mountain nations of Chile and Iceland — joined together to create a new high-level group ‘Ambition on Melting Ice: On Sea-level Rise and Mountain Water Resources’. This was also the first time that the cryosphere was named in the final agreement, with a highlight on tipping points.
I will present you the main outcomes of COP 27 as well as the preparation for the next COP and how we work on keeping the 1.5C limit alive. It will also be the occasion to discuss our respective implications and interests in ensuring science-informed policy-making about the Cryosphere.
The talk is in Aud 2 in the Geology Building. It is also possible to follow at Zoom.
Video link to the lecture will be sent to the mailing lists alle@geo and geohyd-info@geo. If you want to subscribe to the geohyd-info@geo list send an email to Anita.
