GEOHYD Lunch Seminar: Down-glacier propagating speedups similar to a surge of Sít’ Kusá (Turner Glacier), southeast Alaska

Welcome to our GEOHYD Lunch Seminar Friday 14th of April @ 12:15 in Aud. 2, Geology building, or via video link using Zoom. The seminar is held by Jukes Liu, Geo, Boise State University.

Seminar by Jukes Liu, Geo, Boise State University:

Down-glacier propagating speedups similar to a surge of Sít’ Kusá (Turner Glacier), southeast Alaska

Abstract:

Ice flow acceleration and related instabilities comprise a large portion of global glacier mass loss. Surging glaciers present an opportunity to study the initiation and propagation of flow instabilities on semi-regular intervals. This talk focuses on Sít’ Kusá (Turner Glacier) in southeast Alaska, which has the shortest known surge recurrence interval of ~8 years. I will present on the observed changes in motion of Sít’ Kusá throughout its most recent surge cycle from image analysis techniques and field observations. Annual speedups propagate down-glacier from the upper tributary of Sít’ Kusá and appear to be similar to the 2020-2021 surge. These observations challenge the established dichotomy between quiescent and active phases of surging glaciers.

The talk is in Aud 2 in the Geology Building. It is also possible to follow at Zoom.

Video link to the lecture will be sent to the mailing lists alle@geo and geohyd-info@geo. If you want to subscribe to the geohyd-info@geo list send an email to Anita.
