GEOHYD Lunch Seminar: Pushing the boundaries of 3D-Change Detection with Pléiades Neo to monitor landscape change in New Zealand’s Southern Alps

Welcome to the GEOHYD Lunch Seminar Monday 30th of October @ 12:15 in Aud. 1, Geology building, or via video link using Zoom. The seminar is held by Pascal Sirguey, Uni. of Otago, New Zealand.

Seminar by Pascal Sirguey (University of Otago, New Zealand):

Pushing the boundaries of 3D-Change Detection with Pléiades Neo to monitor landscape change in New Zealand’s Southern Alps

Abstract: The Matariki project transforms environmental monitoring by quantifying environmental resources with high-resolution, automated, satellite photogrammetric mapping (SPM) of landscape change. We have combined traditional photogrammetry with modern computer vision techniques to automate stereo processing and construct repeatable, sub-metre accuracy DSMs. This enables the mapping and detection of changes in surface elevation associated with numerous natural and anthropogenic phenomena (www.otago.ac.nz/surveying/potree/matariki).

As part of the Matariki project and Pléiades Neo Challenge, we compare the performance of SPM with Pléiades PHR and the latest generation Pléiade Neo (PNEO). Our innovative approach to solve the spatial coherence required to detect surface elevation change permitted to demonstrate, characterize, and help fix geometric issues of PNEO imagery that impaired photogrammetric restitution. Our results provide numerous new insights about landscape change affecting the highly dynamic West Coast glacier country of Aotearoa New Zealand. In Kawarau/The Remarkables, a steep alpine range in New Zealand’s Southern Alps/Kā Tiritiri o te Moana we demonstrate our ability to map snow depth with sub-meter accuracy and the significant improvement in resolution and performances brought by PNEO.
