GeoHyd Lunch Seminar: Taking the pulse of Jostedalsbreen

Welcome to our GeoHyd Lunch Seminar on Friday 31th of May @ 12:15 in Aud. 1 in the Geology Building, or via videolink using Zoom. The seminar is held by Thorben Dunse (Western Norway University of Applied Sciences (HVL),

GlaciersTaking the pulse of Jostedalsbreen

Abstract:

Jostedalsbreen is the largest glacier in mainland Norway. The interdisciplinary research project JOSTICE (2020-2025) investigates the present conditions of Jostedalsbreen and its future evolution, while exploring changes in regional climate and socio-economic impacts on glacier tourism, hydropower production and agriculture.

I will present some main achievements of JOSTICE, including a detailed ice-thickness map based on extensive radar measurements, and a reanalysis of glacier mass balance from mass-balance modelling. I will then move on to a case study from Austdalsbreen. This outlet glacier terminates into the Styggevatn hydropower reservoir. Following the completion of the dam in 1988, the glacier has turned into an active lake-calving glacier and has retreated by about 720m. I will present two years of timelapse photography capturing the glacier terminus of Austdalsbreen. Simultaneous measurements of water level, surface-air temperature and precipitation allow us to study the role of hydropower regulation and meteorological conditions in modulating seasonal variations in terminus dynamics and frontal ablation.

The GeoHyd seminars are normally held in Auditorium 1 in the Geology Building, Blindern (map) but it is also possible to follow the seminars at Zoom.

Videolink to the lectures will be sent to the e-mail list alle@geo and geohyd-info@geo. If you want to subscribe to the geohyd-info@geo mailing list send an email to Anita.

About the seminar series

The talks in GeoHyd Lunch Seminar Series are offered by the Section for Geography and Hydrology (GeoHyd), Dept. of Geosciences, University of Oslo. The seminars are announced as lunch seminars so bring your lunch if you want to.

The seminars are open for everyone interested, and especially students are welcome.
