"Pan-Antarctic map of near-surface permafrost temperatures at 1 km2 scale"
Abstract:
Frozen ground (including permafrost and seasonally frozen ground) is an important factor of the terrestrial eco-topo-climate system, mutually affecting through interwoven interactions and feedbacks at various timescales. At the present time, it occupies roughly half of the exposed land in the northern hemisphere, but its areal extent and distributions have been varying under changing climate conditions.
We have tried to construct classification and mapping methodologies of the frozen ground using climate information (e.g., reanalysis data and GCM/ESM outputs) and observational data, and applied to map its areal extent and distribution from the regional to global scale for different time periods in the recent 125-thousand-year timeframe. In the talk, I will introduce the methodologies and the application examples, and discuss the implications, the current limitations and future possibilities
