GEOHYD Lunch Seminar: The potential of InSAR products as climate change indicators in permafrost regions

Welcome to our GEOHYD Lunch Seminar Friday 2nd of December @ 12:15 in Aud. 2, Geology building or via videolink using Zoom. The seminar is helt by Line Rouyet, NORCE.

Seminar by Line Rouyet, Researcher, NORCE.

The potential of InSAR products as climate change indicators in permafrost regions

Abstract: Satellite Synthetic Aperture Radar Interferometry (InSAR) is a remote sensing technique allowing for the large-scale detection of ground surface displacements at centimetre to submillimetre accuracy.
In permafrost lowlands, InSAR can document frost heave and thaw subsidence patterns associated with the formation and melt of ground ice in the active and transient layers. Evidenced relations between displacement patterns, ground temperature and ice content have shown the potential of using InSAR to document parameters related to the ground thermal regime.
In cold-climate mountains, permafrost landforms are creeping down the slope under the effect of the gravity. Rock glaciers are typical evidence of past or present permafrost in mountains and InSAR can contribute to inventorying their distribution and activity. Active rock glaciers have downslope creep rates from cm/yr to several m/yr. As they tend to accelerate under warmer conditions, rock glacier velocity (RGV) has been recently accepted by GCOS as a new product of the ECV Permafrost. In this context, InSAR has the potential to monitor RGV over many landforms within large regions all around the globe.
In this presentation, I will introduce and discuss the current state-of-the-art, ongoing research and identified challenges to exploit InSAR products as climate change indicators both in permafrost lowlands and in cold-climate mountains.
