Oslo joint seminar in atmospheric, ocean and climate science, Andreas Born

Atmospheric and climate sciences have a stronghold in Oslo among the four institutions University of Oslo, the Meteorological Institute, CICERO and NILU. This joint seminar invites renowned international experts to contribute to an informal series of lectures, meant to create interaction with the Oslo atmospheric and climate science community on recent highlights and analysis in the field. All seminars will be held on Thursdays (Noon -1pm) and lunch (sandwiches) will be served on a “first-come-first-served”-basis.

Speaker: Andreas Born (U. of Bergen)

Title:  The challenges and potential of coupled land ice-climate simulations (with NorESM)

Abstract: The accelerating melting of the Greenland ice sheet is threatening coasts globally. However, projections of future ice loss continue to be highly uncertain, not least because our understanding of the interaction between ice sheets and other components of the climate system remains incomplete. The full integration of land ice models in coupled climate models promises to boost progress in this field as it enables detailed simulations of the complex bi-directional interactions. I will summarize work that illustrates the need for coupled land ice-climate models and make the case that simulations of paleoclimate are an indispensable part of this effort. Finally, I will briefly outline why NorESM is well suited for this task.
