Abstract:
Volcanoes impact Earth's environment on a range of temporal and spatial scales. In the deep past volcanism has been implicated in significant environment perturbations such as mass extinction events with mechanisms invoked including global heating, cooling, ozone depletion and environmental acidification. In the present-day, we see numerous examples of how they impact global climate and local to regional air quality with various implications for human lives and livelihoods. There is still much to understand about how volcanoes interact with our atmosphere and environment and this talk will explore some recent examples of how combining different measurement and modelling approaches can yield new insights into these fascinating processes.
What is the Joint Oslo Seminar (JOS):
Atmospheric and climate sciences have a stronghold in Oslo among the four institutions University of Oslo, the Meteorological Institute, CICERO and NILU. This joint seminar invites renowned international experts to contribute to an informal series of lectures, meant to create interaction with the Oslo atmospheric and climate science community on recent highlights and analysis in the field. All seminars will be held on Thursdays (Noon -1pm).
