Abstract:

The SPARC (Stratosphere-troposphere Processes And their Role in Climate) Reanalysis Intercomparison Project (S-RIP, https://s-rip.github.io/) is a coordinated activity to evaluate global atmospheric reanalysis data products for processes in the troposphere, stratosphere, and mesosphere. In January 2022, the S-RIP published its Final Report with 12 chapters (https://www.sparc-climate.org/sparc-report-no-10/). In this talk, I will summarize key results and recommendations from the S-RIP report. Following the publication of the Report, we have started planning Phase 2 of the S-RIP activity. In Phase 2, we will conduct a full investigation of ERA5, other recently released reanalyses such as CRA-40 and CAFE60, and upcoming reanalyses such as JRA-3Q and MERRA-3. We will also begin to evaluate chemical/composition reanalyses such as CAMS, TCR-2, M2-SCREAM, and BRAM2, along with regional reanalyses where appropriate. In addition to diagnostics, regions, and processes evaluated in Phase 1, we will expand the evaluation to encompass the whole upper mesosphere as well as additional tropospheric diagnostics (e.g., teleconnections, surface extreme events, and their links to the stratosphere). Finally, we plan to extend and enhance model (CCMI, CMIP)-reanalysis intercomparison activities. Your interest, ideas, and participation are most welcome in Phase 2 of the S-RIP activity.

What is the Joint Oslo Seminar (JOS):

  • Atmospheric and climate sciences have a stronghold in Oslo among the four institutions University of Oslo, the Meteorological Institute, CICERO and NILU.
  • This joint seminar invites renowned international experts to contribute to an informal series of lectures, meant to create interaction with the Oslo atmospheric and climate science community on recent highlights and analysis in the field.
  • All seminars will be held on Thursdays (Noon -1pm).
