Title: On the Additivity of Climate Responses to the Volcanic and Solar Forcing in the Early 19th Century

Speaker: Shih-Wei Fang, MPI

Abstract:

The early 19th century was the coldest period over the past 500 years, when strong tropical volcanic events and a solar minimum coincided. The 1809 unidentified eruption and the 1815 Tambora eruption happened consecutively during the Dalton minimum of solar irradiance; however, the relative role of the two forcing (volcano and solar) agents is still unclear. In this talk, I will discuss what are the climate responses from combinations of one volcanic with two different solar forcing reconstructions (SATIRE and PMOD) by simulating the early 19th century climate. From 20-member ensemble simulations with the Max Planck Institute Earth System Model (MPI-ESM1.2-LR), the talk will address the possible internal variabilities and whether the volcano- and solar-induced surface cooling is in general additive, regardless of combining or separating the forcing agents. The regions from the surface ocean to the upper troposphere will be discussed. Besides, the contribution of Arctic Sea ice to the volcanic- and solar-induced surface cooling will be explored in the context of the Arctic Amplification.

What is the Joint Oslo Seminar (JOS):

  • Atmospheric and climate sciences have a stronghold in Oslo among the four institutions University of Oslo, the Meteorological Institute, CICERO and NILU.
  • This joint seminar invites renowned international experts to contribute to an informal series of lectures, meant to create interaction with the Oslo atmospheric and climate science community on recent highlights and analysis in the field.
  • All seminars will be held on Thursdays (Noon -1pm).
