Abstract: Large volcanic eruptions exert a considerable influence on climate variability across timescales spanning from inter-decadal to multi-decadal periods. However, the role of volcanism in millennial-scale climate variability (MCV) and abrupt climate shifts remains less clear. Sulfate deposition data from ice core samples during the Holocene and last glacial cycle are utilized to estimate the recurrence intervals of volcanic eruptions capable of influencing climate during the last glacial period. In this talk, I will introduce a stochastic forcing framework employed within a glacial climate system model to investigate the impact of volcanism on climate variability at millennial timescales. The findings suggest that volcanism played a pivotal role in MCV during various stages of Earth's recent geological history, particularly when the climate system approached advanced warm interstadial and cold stadial states during the last ice age.

What is the Joint Oslo Seminar (JOS):

  • Atmospheric and climate sciences have a stronghold in Oslo among the four institutions University of Oslo, the Meteorological Institute, CICERO and NILU.
  • This joint seminar invites renowned international experts to contribute to an informal series of lectures, meant to create interaction with the Oslo atmospheric and climate science community on recent highlights and analysis in the field.
  • All seminars will be held on Thursdays (12:15 pm -1 pm).
