Finland

Finnish impact research, having lead to eleven confirmed impact structures, is centered in the University of Helsinki. The main topics include palaeomagnetism, petrophysics, geophysical modelling, shock metamorphism and micropalaeontology. The Geological Survey of Finland is carrying out studies on airborne geophysics, radiometric dating and post-impact sedimentation of impact structures. Planetary aspects of impact cratering are studied by the Planetology group of the University of Oulu. The impact group in the Department of Geosciences at University of Oulu focuses on shock metamorphic and geochemical studies of impacts. Recently, the Finnish Geodetic Institute has begun to study gravity anomalies of Finnish impact craters. All the groups also actively collaborate in numerous domestic and international projects. Research training, given in Helsinki and Oulu universities, currently involves ten M.Sc. and Ph.D. students.
