Three impact structures have been discovered in Norway: Gardnos, Mjølnir and the Ritland structures. Active research groups are studying the Mjølnir (palaeo-oceanographical and search for ejecta), while renewed research on the Gardnos impact structure is in particularly focusing on crater formation and post-impact sedimentation. Presently general geological mapping dominates the study of the Ritland structure. The University of Oslo is the Norwegian homebase for impact research, focusing on geological (petrographic, sedimentological, paleontological) and geophysical aspects, along with modeling (tsunami) and finally national digital crater search by newly developed GIS programs.
