JINCO LAKE

Event description

The Jinco GLOF occured at 5 pm on 27August 1982 and formed a huge amount of debris flow. At 7 pm the flood peak arrived at Sar. The summer of 1982 was dry and hot. The outburst might have been the result of a strong glacier ablation that seeped melting water into the glacier bed and made it slide. The ice blocks collapsed into the lake and the generated shock wave damaged the dam, thus causing the burst. Over 1,600 livestock were lost, about 19 hectares of cultivated field were destroyed, and the houses of eight villages were washed away. Gujing village suffered a different degree of destruction.
