PEYTO

Event description

Two flood waves from the terminus of Peyto Glacier occured as a result of very high precipitation in early July 1983 and a landslide which exposed a large section of ice-cored moraine. The initial flood washed away most of the equipment of the NHR gauging station. The instantaneous discharge for this event is thought to have been in the order of 200 - 300 m3/s.
