Event description

 

On March 19, 1901, the greatest combined rock-/ice- and snow avalanche of the Alps occured. It started as a slope failure from the NW face of Fletschhorn (3788 m). The avalanche travelled down 6.2 km and got over 2`300 m highdifference. The volume was between 3 and 5 Mio m3. 2 people lost their lives, also 53 animals. 28 houses were destroyed.
