Event description
Failure of saturated glacial sediments, becoming debris flows. This happened in 1988, when a debris flow from the glacier foreland of Nevado Salcantay, south-east Peru, the main valley blocked such that the backed-up water inundated the Machupicchu power station (costs $ 160 million).
Damage
Hydropowerplant destroyed (costs $ 160 million).
