Master students Kristoffer Sundsmoan and Jørgen Kalaoja at UiO Åpen Dag 2022

Our resident CCS expert Sian Evans a postdoc for NCCS went to find out how our Master Students were getting on at UiO’s Åpen Dag (open day) Thursday 14. March 2022.

With UiO’s strategy aimed towards sustainable energy, it was only fitting that Geoscience showed the many ways they could contribute. Among others, two of our master students Kristoffer Sundsmoan and Jørgen Kalaoja prominently represented the Centre for Carbon Capture at the department (supported by UiO Energi and the NCCS Research Centre).

Sian asked them for a few key points that summed up the day.

"Geology is more than just rocks!" Many of our school leavers were surprised just how diverse Geoscience could be. Pointing to the poster from the geological society, the master students would explain; Geology is much more than digging in the dirt to identify pebbles, but the research of everything from Climate, geo-hazards, to planetary science.

There was a lot of interest in the application of geoscience in renewable energies and sustainable industries. Which gave our CCS Master students a good starting point to lead into Carbon capture and storage (CCS). These two students are part of a team to produce popular resource material, the Åpen dag being their first physical event to promote what they had produced.

On interviewing, the Master Students Sian found out that most the audience had not heard of CCS, but quickly got on board, grasping the concept and asking highly relevant question regarding safety. Our master students were able to reassure and visualise with the use of a PowerPoint presentation all the measures put in place to monitor and measure risk. Those that had heard of CCS were keen to find out more.

During the day, the Geo-stand experienced queueing of up to 4 – 5 people deep, keen to hear how Geosciences was Working for Planet A. We hope that a few of those school leavers will Join US.
